Tioga County Information Tioga county in the Northern tier of Pennsylvania (Susquehanna Extension Region) is part of the Allegheny Plateau, with flat topped hills and steep valleys. The county contains 1,146 square miles (733,440 acres). About 64 % of the land is in woodlands, 33% in farming and 3 % urbanized. The average elevation is1600-1700 feet above sea level. The countys lowest point - 850 feet above sea level is located along Pine Creek near Blackwell. Its highest point is 2543 feet above sea level is on Cedar Mountain in Elk Township. Tioga county takes its name from "Tyoga" an indian word that means "gateway" or "place to enter. The area is an outdoorsmans paradise with many species of wildlife living here from white tailed deer, black bears, and wild turkeys to osprey, otters and bald eagles. Tioga county is home to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. This 50 mile long scenic canyon embraces a natural waterway Pine Creek and was formed 26,000 years ago from glacial runoff. The Canyon was designated as a Federal registered landmark in 1968. Three US Army Corps of Engineers lakes were built in Tioga county following the "flood of 1972" to protect areas downstream. These lakes serve as major recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to the area. Agriculture
continues to be Tioga countys main industry with 925 farms including
285 dairy farms. Dairying accounts for 90% of the agricultural income
with 16,500 cows producing over 288 million pounds of milk. Agricultures
economic impact in Tioga county with dairy, livestock, forest products
